Empedocles (c. 495 – c. 435 BC): Pre-Socratic philosopher, Empedocles proposed that all matter was composed of four elements (fire, air, water and earth). He believed that these elements combined and separated through the forces of Love and Conflict, creating harmony and discord in the universe.
